3rd Noumea Triathlon

So it was nice to be back on the start line again since my last race in the beginning of January.!

I don’t usually like to fly the day before an event, it’s quite hard and no trip ever seems to run completely smoothly. So Saturday consisted of a 5am wake up, a delayed flight then a bus trip to our Hotel via which seemed like every other hotel in Noumea! Arriving at 2:30 gave us a couple of hours to get our gear ready and do a light swim and bike. To be honest after this travel day I wasn’t quite primed to race the next morning.

Surprisingly there wasn’t a very large field with only 9 pro men and 5 women. But still there were a few athletes that have had some pretty handy results so getting a good solid hit out which I wanted was on the cards.

Starting off with a solid swim gave me a slight advantage over the main rivals, but part way through the ride our group expanded to four which we ended up racing side by side for the next 1hr. My training tailored for the Ironman in June had my legs feeling a little heavy and also my lack of fluids on the bike cost me a bit over the final stages of the run. Coming home in 3rd only 40secs down on the win was ok, it was a good hit out and has made me more aware to the importance of nutrition and hydration which I can’t afford to get wrong in four weeks.

Now it’s another few days of solid training before I start to ease off and freshen up for the main event!
